Cartridge DIY EasyFlash
Capacity: 1MB
EasyFlash is a modern cartridge for the Commodore 64 that lets you instantly launch games and programs stored in CRT format – no more waiting for tapes or floppy disks to load. With its large flash memory and compatibility with popular tools like EasyProg and the EasyFlash MultiCart Creator, it’s perfect for building your own custom compilations or using ready-made cartridge images. It’s an ideal solution for retro enthusiasts who value convenience, speed, and the authentic C64 experience – with a modern twist!
Ready-made CRT files in EasyFlash format can be found, among others, on the CSDB website: https://csdb.dk/search/advancedresult.php?form%5Bcategory%5D=releases&rrelease_type%5B%5D=46
A CRT file with your own compilation of programs and games can also be created using the EasyFlash Multi Cart Creator: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=89912
Depending on your disk drive:
• Pi1541 or SD2IEC: Copy the selected CRT file onto the memory card of the Pi1541 or SD2IEC drive emulator. The Pi1541 must be configured to operate in SD2IEC mode (so-called browse mode).
• 1541/1571/1581 floppy drive: Since the CRT file is larger than the capacity of a 1541 or 1571 disk, it must first be split into smaller parts using the EasySplit program, available at: https://skoe.de/easyflash/splitfiles/ — then copy the resulting .01, .02, etc. files to the appropriate number of floppy disks.
Once you have the CRT file ready (or split into parts), you can program it using EasyProg 1.8.1:
• The cartridge comes pre-programmed with diagnostic tools and the EasyProg program (which appears as the first option when the computer starts). After launching EasyProg, remove the physical jumper from the cartridge.
• EasyProg can also be downloaded from: https://csdb.dk/release/?id=164852 and run from SD2IEC, a drive emulator (e.g. Pi1541), or a floppy disk. Before turning on the computer with the cartridge inserted, remove the jumper.
• In EasyProg, choose Menu → Write CRT to flash and select the CRT file or the first output file from EasySplit (with the .01 extension) using the file browser.
• During flashing, graphic artifacts may appear on the screen — this is completely normal. Once programming is complete, turn off the computer and reinstall the jumper on the cartridge.
